Kolkata: Today is the 163rd birth anniversary of Bipin Chandra Pal, one of the nationalists who were at the forefront of India's independence struggle against British imperial rule. Pal had a multi-faceted personality – a noted writer, orator, social reformer and politician. He was part of the firebrand triumvirate - ‘Lal Bal Pal’, also comprising Lala Lajpat Rai and Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak.

He received education at the Church Mission Society College (now known as St Paul's Cathedral Mission College), a college affiliated with the University of Calcutta. He even taught at the same college. After the demise of his first wife, he solemnized marriage with a widow and became a member of the Brahmo Samaj.

He, along with Lala Lajpat Rai and Bal Gangadhar Tilak, advocated the Swadeshi movement by boycotting all foreign-made goods and emphasising the use of Indian-manufactured goods. Pal was awarded a six-month jail term refusing to provide evidence against Aurobindo Ghosh, a prominent freedom fighter and philosopher, in the Bande Mataram sedition case. Gosh referred to Pal as "one of the mightiest prophets of nationalism".
