History/Background Team handball was invented in Europe around the 1890’s. In parts of Europe, it was played with 7 players per team on and indoor field. In other parts, it was played outdoors with 11 players per team. Most describe the sport as a cross between basketball, hockey, soccer, and water polo.

This was a grass version with 11 players. The sport was then not included on the programme, except as a demonstration sport in Helsinki in 1952.
Handball is played in a sports hall on a 40m (131’ 3”) x 20m (65’ 7”) court. The length may be shortened when space is limited, but England Handball can provide guidance on this. The goal area line, or 6-metre line (19’ 8”), is the most important line. No one except the goalkeeper is allowed to stand in the goal area.
